About The Chickens...
Wow, that really got some attention! I am taking the class to find out just how much work this will be and just how many chickens can supply a family of 3. Yes, I still feed Dear Aunt Myrna. This whole idea came about when we were at a going away party for the Byards across the street from us. Kristin Alber was there and they have chickens so we started talking about it. She told me some things I didn't know about commercially raised chickens. All I am going to say is "poor, poor, chickens". It was so so sad. And then I went home and did my research on the internet. Let's just say YOU REALLY CAN FIND ANYTHING ON THE INTERNET. Hence, Kim now needs her own spoiled rotten, happy chickens! At the same party our other neighbors, Justin and Lisl brought their homegrown cantaloupe. Boy, was it good! They have a raised bed garden and that's what I want. I'll start small with a little broccoli and carrots and see how it goes. From what I have read they can both be planted now so I really need to get The Peddler busy. And starting October 1st day old chicks can be shipped. They actually ship them through the mail! They have to be a day old though, because they feed off of the yolk sack for their first three days of life! Who knew? I'll keep you posted!

Looks like the Peddler and my DH will be doing the same thing this weeked. We just finished our raised beds and can't wait to plant! Now, if I could just get some chickens! lol My farm girl roots are sure showing!
And did you know you will have to order more than 3 chicks?? What kind are you looking at? I like the Dommanickers..they are black with white little poka dots..lol.
I have actually found a place where I can order chicks in small quantities. Go here http://www.mypetchicken.com/Day_Old_Baby_Chicks-Easter_Eggers-P246.aspx
and look at these. I think this is what I am going to get. And, so many of my neighbors are interested we may just do a neighborhood order!
Are you sure you aren't from the Midwest? We could be twins separated at birth. :) We have two raised garden beds. It's pretty cool to grow your own veggies. You should see my asparagus.
This brought back memories of growing up on a farm. When I was little, we had a large fenced in area for the chickens out near the barn. My mom would send my sister and I out to gather the eggs. Of course, there had to have a rooster in with the hems! (I think you know the reason!) He was mean and would chase us. I remember thinking my life was in danger every time I went to get the eggs. We lived and I think we eventually had the rooster for Sunday dinner.
Wish you luck with the chickens.
Farm fresh eggs - store bought do not even compare! We have 4 chickens and get 4 eggs a day. Plenty to keep us up to our eyeballs in eggs. And chickens make good pets, too! We love ours.
